Overview
McDougall Hunt Neighborhood Sustainable Redevelopment Plan Progress
The McDougall-Hunt Neighborhood Sustainable Redevelopment Plan creates an actionable vision focused on developing equitable and productive uses for the area’s vacant land. With an aim to create a blight-free neighborhood offering affordable housing options for new and existing residents alike. The goal was to accelerate and amplify social, environmental and economic justice for the local community.
The McDougall Hunt neighborhood was chosen because of its location—less than a mile from downtown Detroit, its historic relevance—adjacent to the 1950’s thriving community of Black Bottom, and its ample supply of vacant land.
The Alternative Foundation, in partnership with Bailey Park Neighborhood Development Corporation, crafted a plan that was centered on resident-driven community engagement. Collectively, they formed a coalition of more than 20 stakeholders that actively engaged neighborhood groups, faith-based groups, and civic and development groups in the planning process.
The collaborative approach to planning the McDougall Hunt Sustainable Redevelopment Project has proven to be a viable platform for implementation through specific strategies engaging vacant land, residential resources and affordable housing. Together, the team continues to drive sustainable change in McDougall-Hunt, while offering guidance and hope for other communities embarking on similar journeys.
